Pygg was a Middle English term referring to a type of orange colored clay. In the Middle Ages, people often stowed coins in pots made of pygg and called these jars pygg jars. Through the progression of language, this term came to be known as pig banks or piggy banks, and began to refer more to the shape of the vessel instead of the material it used to be fashioned out of.
