The spikes on the Statue of Liberty’s crown aren’t actually part of the crown. They are meant to be a part of a halo, or an aureole, and each spike represents one of the world’s seven seas and continents. The spikes were temporarily removed in 1938 so that their rusted supports could be replaced.
